Here is the last strip for 2010. Not sure where Long Hair, Art Girl, and Punk Rock will go in the year ahead, but hopefully the art will be consistent.
My love of film/cinema flourished by me taking an International Cinema class in college to meet a multi-cultural requirement. Glad I got to use "The Girl Who Chased a Tiger" poster again.
As for the Punk Rock Drum Machine album? About 7 songs are finished, and just need a bit of post production polish. As for the album's title, we're going with "Punkaliscious".
Happy New Year!
Paddy

Punk Rock Drum Machine Comic Strip 12/22/2010
Anyone that has ever had a conversation with me about film or cinema has heard my rant about Hollywood and my idea about "foreign films for dummies". I think at an early age I recognized that a film that found it too inconvenient to have characters speak native languages in their native foreign lands was not very believable. It was college however that opened my eyes and mind to international cinema.
If you look at the first Star Wars, it was superior to me than say Star Trek not because of the effects, but because Greedo spoke a language that required subtitles. It was lame that Han kept answering him in English, and they understood each other, but it was a decent attempt. I say the prequels fail because they didn't utilize other languages, and chose to have eccentric characters speak in accents, which was later harped on because it perpetuated stereo types. Lucas would have saved himself a huge headache if he'd trust that his audience could read.
Why Inglorious Basterds works as a film despite straying from historical accuracy? Because you believe it when the film deals with differences in language appropriately. It is that difference language that makes the opening scene work.
There, I've ranted.
I'm not quite satisfied with the looks of Long Hair and Art Girl from a straight on perspective. It is obvious that years of Punk Rock Drum Machine albums have given me more practice drawing the robot or "droid" as you will. I'm toying with a possible redesign of their head shapes to possibly give me more consistency. The truth is I probably should practice, but then that would require more than 15 minutes a week and would take a way my excuse for sucking.
In following up with the new Punk Rock Drum Machine album news, Angus the Dog had his contribution removed. I'm certain a credit on the album would have gone to his head, and his head is big enough as it is. Hopefully the holiday break will allow me to wrap up a few more tracks. I'll also be making an announcement of where Punk Rock Drum Machine songs will be hosted after the new year.
Happy Holidays and I'm sorry this post was so long.

Punk Rock Drum Machine Comic Strip 12/15/2010
I would have thought I'd have made more of a statement about how annoying cell phones are in movie theaters, but in the end it is kind of obvious, except to the people who still forget to turn them off, or better yet, take the call and talk in the entry way so everyone can hear.
That said, the idea of forwarding calls to Punk Rock is funny to me, and that I have to draw him with the phone to the ear pose so we know he's on the phone. You'd think he'd have been one of those bluetooth schizophrenic types talking to thin air, but the hand to the ear is just better comedy.
As for the upcoming Punk Rock Drum Machine album, four tracks are done, and the fifth track should be completed soon. Not much details to give out at this moment other than Angus the Dog snuck his way onto a track and now he'll have to get a credit on the album sleeve because his contribution actually works. True story.
I really need to keep the door to the studio closed.

Punk Rock Drum Machine Comic Strip 12/08/2010
While seeing the Inglorious Basterds last year I came across the 32 oz. small soda. If soda sizes continue to grow beyond the size of the human bladder, there may be a return of the "intermission" in the middle of films.
"The Girl Who Chased a Tiger" poster came out better than I thought. I'm sure this would have been the fourth title in the Millennium Trilogy.
"YOWZA" just seemed right for some reason.

My theory on caffeine is it is most effective when you're trying to go to sleep. Next week, a trip to the movies, or shall I say "cinema".

Punk Rock Drum Machine Comic Strip 11/24/2010
First let's start with Happy Thanksgiving. I'm not a big fan of Thanksgiving, or specifically turkey, but I'm a big fan of not going to work and being paid, so I'm thankful for that.
Art Girl returns, but so does the lame Star Wars references, so sort of a win - lose. Still this week's strip allowed me the opportunity to poke fun at Long Hair and make a hippie joke.
The thing I think I like most about this strip other than I sort of threw in some backgrounds is Punk Rock's reaction in panel 2. The antennae are very Tick-ish and make me laugh every time I look at it. Expressive antennae....I may be on to something.

Punk Rock Drum Machine Comic Strip 11/17/2010
This week's strip is done with proper comic strip dimensions. I finally looked it up.
I also touched on something that will probably be explored later, apps. I figure if a phone can have an app, why not a Punk Rock Drum Machine. There really isn't much to this week's strip, but what there is I like. I also think we have our first "sigh".
Next week, a trip to Cafe Goo, and the second appearance of Art Girl.
Recording of the latest Punk Rock Drum Machine started last week.
You've been warned.

Punk Rock Drum Machine Comic Strip 11/10/2010
And so enters Art Girl.
We couldn't have Long Hair and Punk Rock talking to themselves forever.
I wasn't sure how I was going to draw Art Girl, and in the end I gave her Goo Goo bangs with dark hair and stripey leggings. Now that I have her design down, we'll flesh out her character as the strip goes along.
To clear up any questions about her name, I chose Art Girl because when I was in college if I didn't know someone's name, I just applied the context of where I knew them, or quick descriptions. My friends in college knew exactly who I was talking about if I said names like "Art Girl", "Siouxsie clone", "Bauhaus jacket", or "Beer" (there was a scroungy looking guy that was a boyfriend of one of my roommates my freshmen year, and I never saw him without a beer, so hence his name). It wasn't meant to be cruel, just a way of keeping the conversations going.
Calling her Art Girl also accomplishes the fact that I don't have to come up with a real name, like I did with Long Hair.

Punk Rock Drum Machine Comic Strip 11/03/2010
So we start a new thread this week leading to the debut of a new character next week.
Regarding my poor art skills, I like to think of my repertoire of being that I can only draw a few types of characters, sort of like a guitarist that only knows 3 chords. Now what to do with those 3 chords is the challenge.

Punk Rock Drum Machine Comic Strip 10/27/2010
As promised, a strip for Halloween. It is my first single panel of the strip so far and actually includes some background illustration.
Under normal circumstances I would probably offer apologies to creator, George Lucas, for my poor take on his characters, but in all seriousness with all the other Star Wars criticisms living on the internet, do you think he really cares about this? If apologies are in order it should be for putting out a strip despite having any talent other than for drawing a swirly eyed robot.
Happy Trick or Treating!

Punk Rock Drum Machine Comic Strip 10/20/2010
So there it is, a strip with characters called "Long Hair" and "Punk Rock", both of which were names street vendors in Mexico used to call me to try and get me to buy a leather jacket.
I think next week's strip may be a special Halloween one, which will buy me time on debuting a new character.
Thanks again for all the feedback, it is appreciated.

Punk Rock Drum Machine Comic Strip 10/13/2010
To avoid this week's strip containing an inside joke or hip reference for kid's television programming, I'm providing a definition of "Robo-Cluck 3000" via the wubblog
So there is no inside joke since I googled the definition for you, but just trust me that if someone thought of comparing you to a Robo-Cluck 3000, you'd be offended because it is the most ridiculous robot I could think of.
And for those on pins and needles wondering if Long Hair is going to call his new companion "Punk Rock Drum Machine", next week's strip will answer that question once and for all.
Exciting isn't it?
The Robo-Cluck 3000. A robotic chicken that lays over a hundred eggs a minute.

Punk Rock Drum Machine Comic Strip 10/06/2010
Punk Rock Drum Machine, annoying and helpful.
I was glad to read in a book on cartooning that you should never do lettering in anything but all caps. I can't wait to find more rules to break...What next? Be funny and know how to draw???? HAHAHAHA!!!!!

Punk Rock Drum Machine Comic Strip 09/22/2010
I've gotten some feedback on the strip, and I very much appreciate all of it. Sometimes it can lead to an idea for a strip such as the strip for this week that comes off the "who's the girl?" feedback.
Keep 'em coming.

Punk Rock Drum Machine Comic Strip 09/15/2010
Did you notice I changed the lettering? After seeing the two compared, I went back to non all caps because it looked cleaner, and allows me the room for yelling with all caps in future strips, especially since I'm no pro that hand writes the lettering for dialogue.
I think one of the goals of this strip will be to do just enough to possibly get a table at the San Diego Comic Con and sit by my lonesome and people watch.
The other goal is that I hope to get a week or two ahead. A couple more weeks of not much effort strips like this week's and it should be no problem.
I'd also say a Punk Rock Drum Machine bobble head is a goal as well, but I'm a realist.

Punk Rock Drum Machine Comic Strip 09/08/2010
I knew this would be a work in progress, and this week's strip shows just that if you notice that I have adopted the cartoonist style of using all caps for the lettering. I was tempted to George Lucas last week's strip, but decided against it.
Thanks for all the kind words on the debut.
Cheers

Punk Rock Drum Machine Comic Strip Debut 09/01/2010
Below is the debut of Punk Rock Drum Machine (the comic strip)
If you're asking why have a comic strip named Punk Rock Drum Machine when I already have a band named Punk Rock Drum Machine, the answer is the same as for why I do the band...I feel like doing this.
The strip will hopefully be published on a weekly basis. Not sure where it will all go, but that's the fun.
